Medicine and dentistry are among the most demanding courses of study, with years of training before you enter the profession.
In Singapore, scholarships from government-linked organisations and universities can help support students pursuing these fields.
But there is more to consider than how much a scholarship covers. Eligibility requirements, what is included and any service commitment can all differ, so it pays to understand the terms before you apply.
This guide takes a closer look at the medicine and dentistry scholarships available in Singapore, so you can compare the options more easily.
Also known as the Medical/Dental Undergraduate Agreement, all medical and dental students, regardless of nationality, pursuing their studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), or Duke-NUS Medical School, are required to serve a bond with MOH upon graduation.
For medicine graduates, the bond lasts four or five years for local students, and five or six years for permanent residents (PRs) or international students. This begins after you complete a compulsory one-year housemanship and are successfully registered with the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) as a practising doctor.
Dental graduates follow a similar principle, though their bond period, four years for Singaporeans and five years for PRs or international students, begin once they start working at a local healthcare institution rather than after a housemanship.
One other point to keep in mind is that the MOH bond is separate from, and often runs alongside, any additional bond attached to a specific scholarship, such as those from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) or PSC. In such cases, the two bonds can run concurrently, but one is not necessarily shortened by the other.
Introduced in 2017 in partnership with MOH, the PSC Scholarship (Medicine/Dentistry) takes a slightly different approach from most scholarships on this list. It supports students who have already begun their medical or dental degree rather than those applying to university.
The only scholarship of its kind for aspiring military doctors, the SAF Medicine Scholarship supports students pursuing medicine locally while preparing them for future leadership positions within the SAF Medical Corps. Recipients will have opportunities to rotate through different medical roles within the SAF over the course of their career.
Much like its medicine counterpart, this scholarship supports students pursuing dentistry locally while preparing them for senior positions within the SAF Medical Corps.

Established in 2018 by Mr Sim Hoay Cheok in memory of his late father, Sim Yung Chong, this scholarship is open to outstanding students pursuing undergraduate Medicine at NTU, and is tenable for up to five years.
The only Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) scholarship on this list, it supports students pursuing Bachelor of Chinese Medicine at NTU. Taught in both English and Mandarin, students study biomedical foundations such as anatomy, physiology, and pathology alongside TCM diagnostics, medications, acupuncture, and moxibustion.
This scholarship looks beyond academic merit, selection also looks at contributions or attributes in other areas, such as community service, with preference given to students from lower-income families.
Administered by the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, this Singapore scholarship looks beyond academic merit alone and is tenable for 5 years. Selection also considers what candidates bring outside the classroom, whether that is community service, student leadership, or sporting excellence.
Rounding out NTU’s Medicine scholarships, this Singapore scholarship weighs community service, student leadership, or sporting excellence, alongside academic merit, with preference given to students from lower-income families.
Unlike the scholarships above, this is not medicine or dentistry-specific. It is open to high-performing NUS undergraduates across disciplines, including medicine and dentistry, with selection based on academic excellence, co-curricular achievements and leadership potential. Recipients are also expected to contribute meaningfully to campus life throughout their studies.
This scholarship is also open to high calibre NUS undergraduates across any discipline, including medicine and dentistry. The same assessment, eligibility criteria and expectations are the same as the NUS Merit Scholarship, with some differences in the offer.

With options ranging from government-linked to university-specific scholarships, the right scholarship for you comes down to how you feel about the bond, institution, and support you value most, whether that is a generous allowance or development opportunities alongside your degree
All the medicine scholarships offered by NTU and NUS are bond-free aside from the mandatory 5-year bond with the MOH. If you take up government-linked instead of university scholarships, such as by PSC and SAF, you will need to serve a bond of 6 years that runs concurrently with the MOH bond.
Yes, there are scholarships for Traditional Chinese Medicine in Singapore. One of them includes the Sim Yung Chong TCM Scholarship offered by NTU.
