With differences in eligibility, financial support and bond requirements, finding the right fit can take some digging.

Defence and security tech scholarships in Singapore

PSC Scholarship (Engineering), Defence and Security Cluster

The Public Service Commission (PSC) oversees many of Singapore’s top public sector scholarships. This scholarship is offered together with the Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX), the tech arm behind Singapore’s Home Team that works on everything from AI to forensic science to cybersecurity. 

Drawn to applying cutting-edge tech to real-world problems like public safety and security? This is worth a closer look.

  • Choice of courses: Selected Digital and Engineering, open to Science
  • Value of tech scholarship: Tuition and compulsory fees, maintenance allowance, sponsorship of approved exchange programmes, return airfare (for overseas study)
  • Bond: 4 years (local university) or 5-6 years (overseas university)

HTX Scholarship

Unlike the PSC-administered track above, this scholarship is offered directly by HTX itself, with a slightly broader course list that includes Science, Computer Science and other approved courses. It is a direct route for those certain HTX is where they want to build a career, rather than being one of several possible postings under the PSC umbrella.

  • Choice of courses: Engineering, Computer Science, Science, other approved courses
  • Value of tech scholarship: Tuition and compulsory fees, maintenance allowance, 1-time pre-studies allowance, travel allowance, return airfare (for overseas study)
  • Bond: 4 years (local university) or 5-6 years (overseas university)

SAF Engineering Scholarship (Uniformed)

Awarded by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), this scholarship is for students interested in pursuing engineering in a military setting. 

As a military engineer, you could work across different engineering roles in the SAF and, depending on your specialisation, have opportunities to rotate through the wider Defence Technology Community, including agencies like Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and DSO National Laboratories (DSO).

  • Choice of courses: Selected Science and Engineering
  • Value of defence scholarship: Tuition and compulsory fees, maintenance allowance, 1-time sponsorship of approved summer exchange programme, book and computer allowance, return airfare (for overseas study)
  • Bond: 4 years (local university) or 5–6 years (overseas university)

DSTA Merit Scholarship

From air defence systems to unmanned technologies, DSTA’s engineers and technologists work on capabilities that support Singapore’s defence.

Its scholarship for local university study is suited to students who want to apply their tech and engineering skills to real-world defence challenges. 

  • Choice of courses: Engineering, Computing, Information, Digital Technology, Mathematics or Science
  • Value of defence scholarship: Tuition and compulsory fees, annual maintenance allowance, sponsored overseas exchange 
  • Bond: 1 year for every year of sponsorship

Public infrastructure and sustainability tech scholarships in Singapore

LTA Local Study Award

Trains, buses, roads, and the mega infrastructure projects like new MRT lines that keep Singapore moving, they are the work of Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA). This local university scholarship affords you a career in building and maintaining new transport systems that millions of commuters rely on daily.

  • Choice of courses: Engineering (Civil, Computer, Electrical and Electronic, and Mechanical), Computer Science and Infrastructure and Project Management 
  • Value of scholarship: Tuition and compulsory fees, maintenance allowance 
  • Bond: 4 years

Singapore Sustainability Scholarship

Climate change, water security and food security are some of Singapore’s biggest challenges – and the Singapore Sustainability Scholarship offers students a chance to work on them. 

The joint scholarship by NEA, SFA and PUB supports different fields of study depending on the agency you join.

For students interested in tech, PUB offers opportunities to apply technology to Singapore’s water system, from managing water resources to developing smarter and more resilient solutions.

  • Choice of courses: Computer Science, Data Science, other approved courses 
  • Value of scholarship: Tuition and compulsory fees, maintenance allowance, book and computer allowance, hostel fees (where applicable), sponsorship of approved enrichment/exchange programmes, return airfare (for overseas study)
  • Bond: 4 years (local university) or 5–6 years (overseas university)

Digital, smart nation and AI scholarships in Singapore

Smart Nation Scholarship

While most applied technology careers may be found in the private sector, the Smart Nation Scholarship offers a path into public service instead.

This is jointly offered by three agencies at the heart of Singapore’s digital push: the Cyber Security Agency (CSA), which helps protect the nation’s cyberspace; GovTech, which builds the digital services citizens use every day; and Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), which shapes the broader infocomm and media landscape. 

  • Choice of courses: Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Computational Biology, Information Security, Analytics and other approved courses    
  • Value of scholarship: Tuition and compulsory fees, maintenance allowance, 1-time allowances (I.T. equipment, settling-in, warm clothing, return shipping)
  • Bond: 4 years (local) or 6 years (overseas)

SG Digital Scholarship

One distinctive feature of IMDA’s SG Digital Scholarship is the flexibility it offers after graduation. Scholars can serve their bond in a tech role at an approved organisation, with options ranging from start-ups to MNCs.

  • Choice of courses: AI, Data Science, Science, Technology, Computer Science, Information Security, Analytics, and other approved courses
  • Value of scholarship: Tuition and compulsory fees, annual maintenance allowance, pre-studies allowance, thesis allowance, medical insurance, visa fees, support for overseas experiences (internships, student exchange programmes and competitions)
  • Bond: 4 years (local) or 5–6 years (overseas)

NUS AI Talent Scholarship

For students who want to specialise in AI, National University of Singapore’s (NUS) AI scholarship supports different paths after graduation, whether that means joining the industry, pursuing research or starting a venture.

The scholarship is bond-free and also offers developmental opportunities including mentorship, research opportunities, and exposure to the global AI community.

  • Choice of courses: AI, Computer Science, Business AI Systems, Robotics and Machine Intelligence    
  • Value of AI scholarship: Tuition and compulsory fees (after subsidies), maintenance allowance, accommodation allowance, 1-time computer allowance, up to two exchange programmes, option to conduct AI research via NUS AI Institute, guaranteed 1-semester overseas student exchange programme
  • Bond: Bond-free

University-specific tech scholarships in Singapore

Tan Seow Chiap – POWERS Scholarship (NTU)

POWERS stands for Promotion of Women in Engineering, Research and Science. The bond-free scholarship supports female Nanyang Technological University (NTU) students pursuing STEM, with mentorship and coaching alongside financial support as they prepare for careers in fields where women remain underrepresented..

  • Choice of courses: Any offered by NTU’s College of Engineering, Science or Computing and Data Science    
  • Value of bond-free scholarship: A 1-time award in your first year, mentorship, coaching and community 
  • Bond: Bond-free 

University Engineering Scholarship (NTU)

For Singapore Polytechnic diploma holders heading to NTU, this scholarship supports further studies in engineering or technology. Scholars can serve their bond in an engineering-related role in Singapore, with the flexibility to choose where they work.  

  • Choice of courses: Engineering, Technology    
  • Value of scholarship: Tuition fees (after subsidies), maintenance allowance, 1-time computer allowance
  • Bond: 4 years working in an engineering-related field
